PALO ALTO, Calif. – Portland concluded the first day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals on Friday hosted by Stanford. Freshman Tatiana Grigoryan had a solid day, posting an opening round win in singles and then teaming with senior Maja Mladenovic for a doubles victory.
Grigoryan cruised in straight sets past Jennifer Lewis of Eastern Washington, but then was eliminated from the main draw by Fresno State's Galina Bykova. Grigoryan, who teamed with Mladenovic for an 8-4 doubles win in the opening round over a duo from Eastern Washington, will face Bykova again in doubles action Saturday morning.
Pilot senior Emily Gould also advanced out of the first round singles draw with a three set win over Eastern Washington's Dani Young. She was knocked off in the Round of 64 by ninth-seeded Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State.
Pilot freshman Radina Dimitrova pushed Washington senior Grace Ysidora to three sets in her first round matchup before falling 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Mladenovic, seeded ninth, also lost a three-set heartbreaker in the Round of 64 to Gonzaga's Alexandra Bourguignon 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).
All six Pilots will continue into consolation singles play on Saturday.
