PROVO, Utah – The Portland women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision on the road against the No. 65 BYU Cougars in the West Coast Conference opener for both schools on Friday at the Indoor Tennis Courts on the BYU campus.
The Pilots (4-2) earned their two points at the top of the singles lineup as No. 70 Lucia Butkovska and Maja Mladenovic posted straight set wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Both players remain unbeaten early in the dual season.
Butkovska knocked off Mayci Jones 6-0, 6-2, while Mladenovic defeated Nicollete Tran 6-3, 7-5.
The Cougars (4-4) grabbed the doubles point with comfortable wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
In the other singles matches, BYU won in straight sets at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6. Portland senior Sophie van den Aarssen pushed Savannah Ware to three sets at the No. 4 position, but came up short.
Portland was without sophomore Jelena Lazarevic, who did not make the trip due to injury.
The Pilots will take a week off before visiting Oregon on Friday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
