SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 57 Washington Huskies beat No. 65-ranked Portland 6-1 on Sunday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington improves to 3-0 on the young season, while Portland falls to 0-1 in its spring dual debut.
Portland senior Lucia Butkovska scored Portland's lone point with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nour Abbes at the No. 1 singles position.
Washington controlled the match from the early-going, sweeping all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead.
Butkovska's win evened the score, but the Huskies would go on to win four of the remaining five singles matches in straight sets.
Pilot freshman Radina Dimitrova took the first set against Tami Grende at No. 3 singles, but Grende would come back to win the match in a third set super tiebreaker.
Washington is one of nine opponents on Portland's 2016 dual schedule that is nationally ranked in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings. Portland will face two more ranked opponents on Jan. 22-24 when it travels to host Duke for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Pilots take on No. 19 Duke on Jan. 22 and then will face either No. 29 Mississippi State or No. 37 Florida State on Jan. 24 to conclude the event.
