PORTLAND, ORE. --- Portland volleyball's Brent Crouch was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, while junior Hannah Troutman landed on the all-league first team to cap one of the most successful seasons in program history. Setter Cali Thompson also landed on the WCC All-Freshman Team and Katie Sullivan earned league honorable mention for the Pilots, who tied for third place in the conference.
In just three seasons, Crouch has transformed the Pilot program. In another record-setting season on the Bluff, the Pilots posted a 17-13 overall record and a 10-8 slate in the WCC. Portland recorded a pair of victories over ranked opponents this fall, with both wins coming during league play against then-No. 11 BYU and at then-No. 7 San Diego, which was the highest ranked opponent ever defeated by the Pilots. This is the first Coach of the Year honor in Portland's program history. Portland's 17 wins are the most in a season since 1986, and their conference record is easily the best league mark since the Pilots began competing in the WCC in 1987. The previous best for WCC wins for the Pilots was eight, which came back in 1989.
"I think the WCC has the best coaches in the country, and to be selected by them and to be among them is truly an honor," said Crouch." I have also been very fortunate to have a terific staff, and a fantastic group of student athletes, much of the credit goes to them. They allow me to lead, and what an honor!"
Troutman received first-team honors coming off of an impressive season, and she's just the third Portland player to ever land on the league's first team. Troutman, who also earned the WCC's Player of the Week after the victory against No. 11 BYU, currently sits fifth all-time in the Portland record books in kills per set (3.44), and she's seventh in both digs per set (3.24) and points per set (3.96). She also has consistently ranked first in league in total kills (441), total attacks (1331), total points (501.5), and attacks per set (11.38) all season.
Thompson landed on the All-Freshman Team with her breakout season, and she already ranks fifth all time for the Pilots in assists per set (9.90). She's first in conference in total assists with 1158, second in assists per set (9.90), and third in service aces with 34. Portland as a team this year has led the WCC in team service aces (187) and aces per set (1.60), ranking 17th and 24th overall nationally.
Sullivan leaves the program ranking second all-time in block assists (335), fourth in total blocks (377), and fourth in blocks per set (.95). She also ranked third and fourth WCC in total blocks (128) and blocks per set (1.09), respectively.
