CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 68-ranked Portland women's tennis team once again went toe-to-toe with a nationally ranked foe before coming up just short. The No. 49 Boston College Eagles held on for a 5-2 victory in the first of three matches scheduled this weekend for the Pilots against ranked opponents.
The Pilots fall to 0-4 this season, all against top 50 opponents. The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall, with their lone loss coming against current No. 9 Virginia.
Portland senior Lucia Butkovska posted an impressive win over a top 50 singles opponent, knocking off No. 48 Asiya Dair 6-4, 7-6. She improves to 2-0 in dual singles play this season. Freshman Tatiana Grigoryan logged the Pilots second point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Safron at No. 5 singles.
Pilot freshman Radina Dmitrova pushed No. 108 Lexi Borr in a three-setter at No. 2 singles before falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Maja Mladenovic also had a close match at No. 3 singles, losing to Vasilyev 6-4, 7-6.
Boston College secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Butkovska and sophomore Jelena Lazarevic were tied with Borr and Urbanati at 6-6 in the No. 1 doubles match when the point was decided.
Portland will next face No. 72 Harvard on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (PT) before concluding the weekend at No. 61 Brown on Sunday at 7 a.m. (PT).
