PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team picked up its second home sweep in as many days with a convincing 7-0 victory over the Idaho Vandals Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots, who swept Seattle on Friday, improve to 3-3 on the season, while Idaho falls to 1-1.
Portland won two of three doubles matches and then swept all six singles matches in straight sets.
"I'm surprised and happy that we didn't give up a set in singles today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We definitely respect Idaho. They are always talented and we usually have close, competitive matches. I think our guys were ready to go today."
Freshman Felix Fan and sophomore Pierre Garcia opened the doubles scoring with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. The Pilots (3-3) then secured the doubles point as sophomores Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia came back to earn a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
Pervolarakis then knocked off Odon Barta for his third straight singles victory at the No. 1 position to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead. Pierre Garcia held off Artem Vasheshnikov 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot and then Mathieu Garcia clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Felipe Fonseca at No. 3.
The Pilots then dominated the second wave of singles play as Fan, Jared Madison and Carlos Donat each cruised to quality wins.
"It was especially satisfying to see Mathieu Garcia and Jared Madison get wins over guys they had lost to before," Gross added. "Mathieu got beat badly by his opponent today in one of his first college events as a freshman and Jared was handled easily just a few months back by his opponent today. Both came through at some big times to reverse those results.
"Besides those two, we had good efforts all the way through the line-up today. I like that we came to play against this team the same as we did against the ranked teams we played last weekend. We will get some more feedback from the video today on what we can continue to sharpen up and hope to come out even better next Saturday against Gonzaga."
Portland will open West Coast Conference play by hosting Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 13 at noon. Live stats and live video will be provided courtesy of PortlandPilots.com.
