EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland women's tennis team won its second match in as many days with a 4-2 victory over the Boise State Broncos Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center. Portland defeated BYU on Friday at home and will continue its weekend with a match tomorrow at UC Irvine at 11 a.m.
The Pilots (3-5, 1-0 WCC) overcame lots of adversity on Saturday to pull out a gutty win. With three of the regulars in the singles lineup unavailable and after dropping the doubles point, Portland battled back to win the top four singles matches to secure the victory.
The Broncos (4-4) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to get the opening point, but the Pilots rallied with senior Lucia Butkovska remaining undefeated in singles with a straight sets win at No. 1. Freshman Tatiana Grigoryan then secured her third straight win at the No. 4 spot to give the Pilots a 2-1 edge.
Freshman Radina Dimitrova pulled out a three-setter at No. 2 singles for her fourth consecutive victory this spring, but Boise State earned its second point with a win at No. 6 singles.
The final two points came down to seniors Maja Mladenovic and Tori Troesch who were in three-set battles at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Both jumped out to early leads and then Mladenovic secured the team victory with a 6-3 deciding set against Bobbi Oshiro. Troesch was leading 3-0 in her third set when the match was decided.
Portland now hops on a plane for a quick flight and morning match against UC Irvine on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Pilots will then face UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at 12 p.m.
