PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots navigate south this weekend to compete at the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships, which are scheduled for Saturday morning on Lake Natoma in Northern California. The Pilots will be racing four boats on Saturday, with the varsity eight, second eight and varsity four counting towards the WCC Championships.
Â
"Each year we are looking to make our mark in the conference, and we have had some season results that show we are on the right track," Portland head coach Pasha Spencer said. "The team has worked hard this year and now it's time to execute the plan."
Â
The WCC's get started with the varsity fours at 9 a.m., with Kaitlin Yap in the cox seat for Portland.
Â
Alice Chang will be coxing Portland's second eight, while Megan Del Pozzi will be rowing stroke. They're scheduled to follow the fours at 9:20 a.m. Portland's second eight has shaved a significant amount off their time this spring, noted Spencer after the Husky Open in April.
Â
The varsity eights conclude the day in the day's signature event, with the seven crews slated to hit the water at 9:40 a.m. Portland's varsity eight will be coxed by Miranda Reyes with Veronica Nicacio rowing stroke. Earlier this season the varsity eight posted the fastest time on the Lake Natoma course in program history.
Â
Portland's second four will also be rowing on Saturday, with that event set to begin at 8:40 a.m.
Â
Gonzaga is the two-time defending conference champion, while the Pilots finished fourth in the WCC last year. Portland's Maggie Keller and Molly Templin were both named to the All-WCC Team last spring.
