PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pilots women's rowing team competed on the Willamette River on Sunday morning, putting six boats on the water at the Annual Portland Fall Classic downtown. The varsity eight began the morning with a first-place finish on the 5000 meter course.
Â
The event's format is a head race, which means crews started one at a time with about 10-15 seconds in between each boat. Portland's varsity eight, which had Miranda Reyes in the coxswain seat and Lauren Jesse rowing stroke, posted a time of 17:34.115, which was 14 seconds faster than second-place Oregon State. The Beavers just did edge Washington State, who finished third.
Â
"For fall racing teams are testing lineups and working on endurance," said Portland head coach Pasha Spencer. "This was our first team race and I'm glad that we executed what we needed to do, and we are looking forward to Head of the Lake next weekend."
Oregon State's crew took the top spot in the second eight race, with the Pilots posting a time of 18:52.931. Portland had Emma Pappenhausen as their coxswain and Avery Romano as the stroke.
Â
Portland also raced three fours at the Portland Fall Classic, with the varsity four 'A' boat covering the course in a time of 19:21.301. The 'B' crew was just behind the 'A' with a time of 19:51.367, and the Washington State 'A' varsity four posted the day's fastest time.
Â
The second four and novice eight capped the day for the Pilots, recording times of 21:17.621 and 22:41.714, respectively.
Â
The course for the Portland Fall Classic started on the Holgate Channel of the Willamette River behind Ross Island. The route heads north and the finish line was near the floating section of the Eastbank Esplanade between the Burnside and Steel Bridges.
Â
The Pilots have one remaining event on their fall schedule, which is the Head of the Lake on Nov. 4 in Seattle.
