STANFORD, Calif. – Portland freshman Neli Sunjic had a strong opening day at the 2019 ITA Northwest Regional Championships by posting a pair of come-from-behind three set wins to advance to the Round of 32 in singles.
Sunjic opened the tournament with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Deniza Marcinkevica of Fresno State. In the Round of 64, she knocked off No. 9 seed Niluka Madurawe of host Stanford by a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 margin. Sunjic will face Washington's Katarina Kopcalic in the Round of 32 on Saturday morning.
Six total Pilots made the trek to regionals. Seniors Jelena Lukic and Emily Soares each had hard-fought three-set opening matches, but came up short.
