Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Portland junior Tom Hann won the top flight singles draw, while sophomores Issa Yoshida and Leo Hibi combined to go undefeated in singles and doubles to highlight Portland's performance at the Gonzaga Invitational.
Hann won the Blue Draw in singles with three wins, including the draw's No. 2 seed from Idaho, Francisco Bascon. He knocked off Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth in the title match comfortably in straight sets.
Yoshida and Hibi won all three doubles matches to claim the Red Draw Doubles title. They also each won all three singles matches in the Red Draw and to meet in the finals, but chose not to play. Hibi won all three of his matches in straight sets.
"We had a few rocky patches but overall the tournament was a pretty strong success," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Tom won the A flight in a fairly decisive final match after grinding his way through Idaho's No. 1 player in the semifinals. It's awesome to see Tom healthy and playing well again. When we get his serve clicking the sky is going to be the limit for him. It was really encouraging this weekend to see him compete so freely.
"Issa and Leo continue to show that they might be the most improved players in college tennis. They were to play each other in the finals, but we opted not to have a teammate match. We had some ups and downs over the weekend of course with as many matches as we play. We now have a solid base understanding of what each individual needs to do to get better between now and our first dual match in January. We are going in the right direction and have an exciting couple of years coming up with this group."
Portland finished the tournament with a collective 7-2 doubles record and 13-3 singles mark. Competing teams at the tournament included host Gonzaga, Idaho, Montana, Montana State and Norther Colorado.
Portland opens its spring season against Portland State on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.
