VANCOUVER LAKE, Wash. --- Portland's second eight and varsity four both finished first in their events as the Pilots battled conference foe Saint Mary's and Seattle U at the UP Invite, which took place on Saturday morning on Vancouver Lake.
 
The varsity eights began the day, and Saint Mary's edged the Pilots by just two seconds. The Gaels posted a time of 7:37.61, while the Pilots covered the course in 7:39.02, which was well ahead of the Redhawks in third. Miranda Reyes was the coxswain for Portland's varsity eight, and Lauren Jesse was rowing stroke.
 
The Pilots' second eight cruised to a first-place finish ahead of the Gaels. With Emma Papenhausen in the coxswain seat and Megan Del Pozzi rowing stroke, Portland's time of 8:03.62 was 23 seconds faster than Saint Mary's.
 
Portland's varsity four also topped the Gaels as the Pilots claimed a time of 7:56.27. Saint Mary's was 13 seconds back with a time of 8:09.00, and Portland had its second first-place showing of the morning with Allison Palazzotto as the coxswain and Meredith Marcinko at the stroke.
 
The novice four, which was coxed by Theresa Shew and had Katie Bayford rowing stroke, capped the day with a time of 8:20.00. The Redhawks cleared the Pilots by 19 seconds.
 
In two weeks the Pilots will be at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The two-day WIRA's will take place on Saturday and Sunday April 27-28 on Lake Natoma, just outside of Sacramento, Calif.
