LONG BEACH, Calif. – Portland women's tennis kicked off the 2020 season on Friday at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational hosted at the Rhodes Tennis Center. The Pilots opened the invitational by sweeping all three doubles matches against Portland State, while freshman Jana Tanevska earned a singles victory on day one.

Tanevska knocked off Inbar Cohen of Long Beach State by a 6-3, 6-1 margin for Portland's lone singles win. CSUN won the other eight singles matches against the Pilots, although Emily Soares and Laura Okazaki pushed their opponents to three sets.

Soares and Okazaki teamed up for one of Portland's three doubles wins against the Vikings. Seniors Jelena Lukic and Anna Oberg won their doubles match, while Marija Elenova and Raphaelle LeBlanc completed the doubles sweep.

Joining the Pilots and host Long Beach State is CSUN and Portland State at the weekend tournament. Each team will play doubles and singles against different schools each day until all four schools have competed against one another. Following the tournament, a singles and doubles winner will be declared based on results and location in the lineup, with more weight given to players in the top flights.

The event continues on Saturday with Portland facing CSUN in doubles and Long Beach State in singles. The Pilots conclude the tournament on Sunday against Long Beach state in doubles and Portland State in singles.
