Pankin beats ranked opponent, but Waves win 5-2

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Sema Pankin earned a win over the 80th ranked player in the nation, but the No. 31 Pepperdine Waves took down the Portland Pilots 5-2. The win drops the Pilots to 8-6 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

"Today I think Pepperdine really just raised their level when they needed to," Portland coach Aaron Gross said. "I feel like we played a heck of a lot better than we did last weekend."

The Pilots pushed the Waves in the doubles matches, but Pepperdine took the point. Portland took early leads in all three matches, but Pepperdine was able to come back in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to take the first point.

Pankin got a big win in the No. 1 singles match over No. 80 Adrian Oetzbach. Pankin swept Oetzbach in straight sets 6-2 and 6-0 . The win was the first a conference opponent has gotten off the Waves this season. The Pilots, however, could not pull out wins in the No. 2 or No. 3 singles matches and quickly fell behind 3-1.

"Sema (Pankin) played a great match, beating their number one guy (Oetzbach) – who is ranked – pretty handily," Gross said. "We are used to seeing that level from Sema in practice. It's cool to see it translate into a big match."

The clinching point came in the No. 5 singles match for Pepperdine. Tim Zeitvogel swept Portland's Nikolas Tvedt in straight sets to make it 4-1 for the Waves. The two teams went on to play out the match, with Nicklas Oberg taking a win in No. 4 singles and Leo Hibi falling in No. 6 singles to settle the score at 5-2.

"And Nick Oberg keeps rolling," Gross said about Oberg's win in the No. 4 slot. "He had a very solid win today against a very experienced opponent."

The Pilots will be back in action on Sunday for their match against the Loyola Marymount Lions, the final home match of the season for Portland. The match is set to start at 10 a.m. with live stats and video available at PortlandPilots.com.
