PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland has announced the addition of Eastern Washington transfer Tyler Robertson to the roster, head coach Shantay Legans announced. Robertson was named the 2021 Big Sky Conference's top reserve as a sophomore this past season in helping the Eagles reach the NCAA Tournament. He will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Pilots.
"Tyler is the ultimate student of the game," Legans said. "His natural instincts and basketball IQ are second to none. He possesses a rare confidence, and it shows not only in his shooting percentages, but also in his ability to hit big shots with the game on the line. Tyler is coming off a Sixth Man of the Year award in the Big Sky, and our staff is thrilled to watch him continue to succeed here at Portland!"
"I'm really looking forward to being a Pilot and continuing to play under Coach Legs," Robertson said. "He has been a big part of my journey so far and I can't wait for the challenge of taking this wonderful school to new heights."
Robertson (6-6, 200) averaged 11.1 points and dished out 3.0 assists per game this past season, which was good for eight in the Big Sky. He also led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio during conference play (2.94, 47/16) and was a major contributor in helping the Eagles win the 2021 Big Sky tourney. Robertson averaged 10.3 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds in EWU's three wins in Boise, including an 18-point, 5-assist, 4-rebound effort against Northern Arizona in the quarterfinals.
In the team's narrow defeat to No. 12 Kansas at the NCAA Tournament, Robertson played 20 minutes and finished with seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Melbourne, Australia native was a Big Sky Conference All-Academic Team selection during the 2019-20 season and appeared in 26 games as a true freshman. He averaged 8.1 minutes, 2.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game as the Eagles claimed the Big Sky Conference regular season title.
Robertson played for the Australian Under-19 National Team at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Greece. He appeared in all seven games for the Emus and averaged 4.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists as the squad finished in ninth place. He also was a member of the Australia national teams that won championships at the 2017 U-17 Oceania Championships and the 2018 U-18 Asia Cup.
A member of the Victoria state team for four years, Robertson led the team to Gold Medals at the Australia Junior Championships from 2016-19, as well as a Silver Medal in 2015.
"I feel like I bring a high IQ guy with the ability to do a little bit of everything on the court," said Robertson of his game. "I'm a very team-first guy so whatever the team needs whether it's rebounding, scoring, ball movement or defense, I feel capable of doing whatever it is needed."
