PORTLAND, Ore. – Right-handed pitcher Brett Gillis and No. 1 Pilot tennis singles player Iva Zelic have garnered U.S. Bank Student-Athlete of the Month recognition for the month of March.
Gillis was one of the best pitchers in the month of March in the WCC. Over the course of the month, Gillis posted a 2-1 record with an ERA of 0.69 in four starts, including one shutout. He struck out 35 batters over that span. Batters only hit .200 against him as well.
The Everett, Wash. native had several standout performances throughout the month. He pitched a seven-inning complete game in the second game of a doubleheader against UC Riverside on March 11, shutting out the Highlanders in the process. He also had 12 strikeouts with only one run and three hits allowed in his start against the BYU Cougars on March 18.
Zelic finished the month 6-0 at No. 1 singles and extended her dual match singles win streak to 11 matches. Zelic posted a three-set win over No. 45-ranked Solymar Colling of San Diego and went on to become just the fourth women's tennis player in program history to earn a national ranking. Zelic also won a pair of doubles matches with partner Angela Schuster.
