STANFORD, Calif. – Three singles players and two doubles teams advanced for Portland after day one of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships held at Taube Family Tennis Center.
Rimona Rouf, Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez each won two matches to move into the Round of 32 in singles. Rouf also partnered with Aleksandra Dimitrijevic for an opening round doubles win and Pethybridge teamed with Iva Zelic to also record a doubles victory. The tandems move on to Round of 32 action on Saturday.
"We played some great tennis all day today," Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic said. "Winning a total of eight singles matches in the main draw and having three players advance to the third round makes this one of the most successful days our program has had at Regionals in my 14 years with this team."
Portland won five of its seven opening round singles matches as Zelic and freshman Nadine Arbaizar Martinez also picked up victories.
Rouf defeated Kaia Wolfe of UC Davis in straight sets and then took out San Jose State's Jovana Babic in a three set marathon 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Pethybridge needed three sets to knock off Washington State's Martina Markov before cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jennifer Kida of Eastern Washington. Rubio Perez defeated Sacramento State's Weronika Ejsmont in three sets before knocking off Scarlett Perkins of Portland State in straight sets.
Zelic and Pethybridge are preseason ranked No. 33 nationally in doubles and opened the tournament with a comfortable 8-3 win against a Portland State duo. Rouf and Dimitrijevic were 8-2 winners against a team from Oregon.
"I am very proud of the way we competed today," Zivkovic said. "We had multiple three set matches, some went out way and others didn't, but we showed real growth in our game and the level that we are capable of competing at.
"Sally, Rimona and Alaia all had to dig deep at certain points today and played some of the best tennis we have seen from them. We look forward to some more great opportunities for our team tomorrow."
Singles action continues tomorrow morning with all three Pilots slated for a 10:30 a.m. start in the winners' bracket. The tournament runs through Tuesday.
