LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – Both varsity eight boats for the Pilots advanced to the grand final of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Sunday while the varsity four advanced to the petit final. It's the fourth time in four seasons racing at WIRAs that the Pilots' varsity eight teams have made the Grand Final.
 
Portland's first varsity eight posted a time of 6:53.72 to finish third in the race. They beat Santa Clara and came up just short against San Diego and Sacramento State. Dawon Lee was the coxswain for the Pilots while Maddie Olson was the stroke.
 
The second varsity eight took fourth in their heat with a time of 7:08.12, beating Saint Mary's and Seattle U. Clarissa Guitierrez and Veronica Conklin were the coxswain and stroke for the boat. The Pilots were fourth in the varsity four race at 8:05.579 with Abbey McHugh as the coxswain and Gabriela Garcia as the stroke.
 
The Pilots will compete tomorrow in their respective final races, with the first varsity racing at 8:30 a.m., the second varsity eight competing at 9:20 a.m. and the varsity four competing at 10:20 a.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for a live stream.
