PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball announced the signing of Cal Poly graduate transfer forward Alimamy Koroma (AL-uh-mom-ee KUH-roe-muh), head coach Shantay Legans announced on Monday. Koroma started 75 games in his four years with the Mustangs and averaged 10.7 points and 4.6 rebounds throughout this career.
"Ali is another impact transfer for our program," Legans said. "He gives us a versatile big that can play inside and step out and make plays. Ali is a tough defender and rebounder who is excited to help our team win games."
"I really connected with Coach Legans and his staff on my visit," Koroma said. "I love the energy and vision for the program and it felt like a good fit."
Koroma (6-8, 220)
joins a short list of 17 players entering the 2023-24 season with career totals of at least 1,100 points, 500 rebounds and 90 blocked shots. He scored 1,157 total points and grabbed 501 rebounds during his tenure, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 71 percent at the free throw line.
A two-time All-Big West honorable mention selection, Koroma averaged 15 minutes per game as a true freshman during the 2019-20 season and then has been a starter the last three years for the Mustangs. He recorded double figures scoring 19 times last season including a high of 23 points in a win over Idaho. Koroma has logged 20 or more points eight times throughout his career.
"Rebounding and providing an interior presence are my strengths," Koroma said. "I can score inside, but also will help the team by stretching the floor and making shots. Defensively I block shots and make it hard for other teams to score."
Koroma is the final transfer to join the Pilots this spring following the previous announcements of
Thomas Oosterbroek,
Noah Jordan and
Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams. Incoming freshmen
Cyprian Hyde and
Vincent Delano also signed during the November signing period.
Legans and the Pilots will bring back several key players including two-time All-West Coast Conference guard, Tyler Robertson. Robertson averaged 15.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and a WCC-best 5.2 assists per game last season.
Chris Austin, who averaged 14.2 points for the Pilots during the 2021-22 season, will return to the active roster next year after redshirting this past season with a broken leg. Juanse Gorosito earned All-WCC Freshman Team honors, broke the Pilot freshman record for three-pointers made (63) and started 12 games, while center Vasilije Vucinic started 10 games. Portland is also eager to integrate Vukasin Masic (Maine transfer) and freshman Bol Dengdit who are coming off redshirt seasons and expected to be key contributors.
