PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball has signed Miami transfer Thomas Oosterbroek (OAST-uhr-brook), head coach Shantay Legans announced on Friday. Oosterbroek spent two seasons at Miami where the team reached the Elite Eight in 2022 and Final Four in 2023. He comes to The Bluff with three years of eligibility remaining.
"We think Thomas is going to surprise a lot of people," Portland head coach Shantay Legans said. "He had many offers out of high school and saw how a championship-level program operates at Miami. Now he will get a chance to show his diverse skill set and make an impact on our program."
"Portland reached out quickly after I entered the portal," Oosterbroek said of his commitment. "I was familiar and comfortable with the coaching staff since they previously recruited me and after doing my own research, I realized it was a place that I could thrive."
Oosterbroek (6-8, 215) redshirted last season as the Hurricanes reached the NCAA Final Four. He appeared in four games as a true freshman during the 2021-22 season, making his collegiate debut against nationally ranked Alabama. Oosterbroek scored his first point on a free throw in a win over eventual NCAA runner-up North Carolina and played the final minute of the season in the Elite Eight matchup with eventual national champion, Kansas.
A 2021 graduate of Brentwood School (Calif.), Oosterbroek averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game as a senior. He garnered All-Gold Coast League First Team honors and was named the team MVP after leading the school to the state playoffs for the second year in a row.
"I am a big, strong guard that is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win," Oosterbroek said. "My strengths are leadership, shooting, rebounding and attacking the rim. Coming from a culture of winning at Miami, I really know what it takes to put in the work. Being close to teammates and having a common goal is very important and I am excited to bring that experience to Portland."
Oosterbroek is the latest transfer to join the Pilots following yesterday's announcement of
Noah Jordan along with Lamar transfer
Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams. Incoming freshmen
Cyprian Hyde and
Vincent Delano also signed during the November signing period.
Legans and the Pilots will bring back several key players including two-time All-West Coast Conference guard, Tyler Robertson. Robertson averaged 15.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and a WCC-best 5.2 assists per game last season.
Chris Austin, who averaged 14.2 points for the Pilots during the 2021-22 season, will return to the active roster next year after redshirting this past season with a broken leg. Juanse Gorosito earned All-WCC Freshman Team honors, broke the Pilot freshman record for three-pointers made (63) and started 12 games, while center Vasilije Vucinic started 10 games. Portland is also eager to integrate Vukasin Masic (Maine transfer) and freshman Bol Dengdit who are coming off redshirt seasons and expected to be key contributors.
