LAKE NATOMA, Calif. -- The Pilots had a solid Day 1 at the Western International Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Saturday, with both varsity eights and the novice four making the grand final and the varsity four set to compete in the petite final tomorrow.
The first varsity eight makes the cut for the big race after taking third in their heat with a time of 6:56.266. Leahbelle Paladino was the coxswain while Kate Feustel was the stroke. With just one Division I second varsity eight race, Saturday's competition involved just racing for lanes to determine the grand final, with the Pilots taking fourth. They finished fourth with a time of 7:00.166, with Dawon Lee as the coxswain and Julia Klipinger as the stroke.
The four-person boats for the Pilots put together solid days as well, with the varsity four taking fourth in their heat and posting a time of 8:02.348. Clarissa Gutierrez was the coxswain for Portland with Gabriela Garcia as the stroke. The final boat – and highest finisher for Portland – was the novice four, who finished second with a time of 8:37.671. Ania Fernandez was the coxswain with Madi Quinton as the stroke.
The Pilots will be back at it for the final day of WIRAs tomorrow. The varsity eight's will race in their respective grand finals early in the morning, with the first varsity eight set for 8:40 a.m. and the second varsity eight set for 9 a.m. The varsity four will race in the petite final tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. and the novice four will race in the grand final tomorrow at 12:20 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for video and live results.
