VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Portland Pilots Rowing earned a win in the second varsity eight heat at the Pilot/Pioneer Invite this Saturday, the second win of the season for the second varsity eight. The open four and first varsity eight for Portland also took second in their heats while the varsity four took fifth. The second round of races scheduled for today did not take place due to rain and wind.
The open four started the day with a second-place finish to Seattle Pacific, finishing with a time of 9:41.60. Natalie Petty was the cox while Isabella Honig was the stroke. Ania Fernandez was set to cox for the second heat before the cancelation. The varsity four followed that with a fifth-place finish in their race, posting a time of 9:09.90 with Clarissa Gutierrez and Gaby Twitchell as the coxswain and stroke respectively.
Portland raced in the second heat of the first varsity eight races, rowing in a tightly contested race with Cal Poly Humboldt. They ended up losing by just over a second, taking second place with a time of 7:51.20. Dawon Lee and Kate Feustel were the cox and the stroke. But the Pilots wouldn't walk away without a win, with the second varsity eight taking first with a time 8:37.20. Leahbelle Paladino was the coxswain with Julia Kiplinger as the stroke.
Next up, the Pilots head to California for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. Those start on Saturday, April 27. Check PortlandPilots.com
