Box Score PORTLAND, Ore – Portland women's tennis defeated Idaho State 6-1 on Sunday at Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center for the team's fifth consecutive victory. The Pilots improve to 5-3 overall, while the Bengals fall to 6-7 on the season.
Portland swept the doubles point to grab the early momentum. The No. 1 tandem of Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez cruised to a 6-1 win and then the No. 3 freshmen duo of Isabella Marquart and Lexie Flores clinched with a 6-3 win. Portland's No. 2 team of Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez completed the sweep with a tiebreak win.
Rubio Perez cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to double Portland's lead. Dimitrijevic then pulled out a three-set comeback at No. 3 against Sydney Morris to make it 3-0. Idaho State picked up its lone point at No. 1 singles as Stefanya Shalakhova won a three-setter against Pethybridge.
The bottom of Portland's lineup continued to dominate as Marquart, Arbaizar Martinez and Maria Galatescu each won in straight sets to complete the scoring.
"This was one of the best weekends of tennis that our team has played this season," Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic said. "Both of these teams have given us a lot of trouble in the past and we made sure to prepare well. The focus, intention and attention to detail was at an extremely high level the entire week of practice which translated to a high level of play in both matches this weekend. Our doubles is starting to come together nicely, but I cannot emphasize enough how impressed I am with the play of Sally and Alaia at that number one spot. They have been such an anchor for us in so many ways.
"Our top three singles have battled great in every home match this year and it is that senior leadership and grit that has set a standard for our team. I am very proud of Sally, Aleksandra and Alaia for doing that. The second part of our lineup hasn't dropped a set in the last few matches, and I strongly believe that our depth will make a big difference over the remainder of our schedule. I look forward to seeing continued improvement from all of our players as it is the internal development that sets us apart as a program."
Portland returns to action on Friday with a road match at Sacramento State on Friday at noon. The Pilots then visit UC Davis on Saturday with an 11 a.m. start.
