SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Portland women's tennis booked its ticket to the WCC Championships and will face the No. 54-ranked Washington State Cougars on Thursday at 10 a.m. The tournament will be hosted at San Diego State's Aztec Tennis Center from April 24-26.
The Pilots (9-9, 4-4 WCC) secured their tourney berth with a Senior Day home win against Gonzaga on Saturday. Portland is the No. 6 seed and takes on third-seeded Washington State (16-7, 6-2). The Cougars defeated the Pilots at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center by a 4-2 margin on April 12.
Thursday's winner will move on to Friday's semifinals against No. 2 seed San Diego. The tournament final is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. All WCC Championship matches will have live video and scoring links available via the
tournament home page.
Portland has been led by senior Sally Pethybridge at the top of the lineup. Pethybridge finished 4-3 at No. 1 singles during WCC play and partnered with Alaia Rubio Perez to go 11-3 in dual doubles matches at the top spot. Rubio Perez has also gone 9-7 in dual singles at the No. 2 position.
Fellow senior Aleksandra Dimitrijevic has been solid with a 7-8 dual singles record and six doubles wins as well.
Portland's late-season lineup also features sophomore Nadine Arbaizar Martinez and true freshmen Isabella Marquart and Maria Galatescu, who have all won big matches in the lower part of the lineup.
