Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – Portland women's tennis earned a big road result with a 5-2 victory over the Pacific Tigers Saturday at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
The Pilots (7-8, 2-3 WCC) set the tone early by claiming the doubles point. Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez continued their impressive form with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Maria Galatescu and Isabella Marquart then clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Singles was a battle with three of the six matches going a full three sets. Marquart and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez picked up straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Pethybridge then provided the match clincher with a huge comeback at the No. 1 position. Down a set and 3-0 in the second, she battled all the way back for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 win against Megan Carmichael.
Rubio Perez added the final point with another three-set comeback at No. 2 with a 0-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory against Milena Maiorova.
The Tigers (5-12, 0-4) earned wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles to conclude the scoring.
"This was a tough match and an incredible team effort today," Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic said. "Pacific had our number over the last two seasons and we knew that today was going to be a battle from the first to the last point. I am very proud of the team and how they handled nerves and adversity today.
"Sally and Alaia continue to be stellar in doubles and our freshman duo of Maria and Bella played some great tennis to close out their match and get us a much-needed doubles point. Isabella continues to impress us all with great tennis and Nadine played a very solid match to get us into a position to win. They both played very solid tennis and were brave on big points.
"Sally did the impossible today and came back from 1-6, 0-3 down to clinch it for us and Alaia followed with a great comeback of her own to extend the lead. I couldn't be more proud of their effort and fight today. They showed why they are some of the best players to ever wear Portland purple. We have a tough home stretch coming but we are going to enjoy this for now."
The Pilots will conclude the regular season with three WCC home matches over the next two weeks. Portland hosts No 59 Washington State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and then Saint Mary's on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Pilots then host rival Gonzaga on Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m.
