PORTLAND, Ore. -- The University of Portland men's basketball program has added transfer guard Chris Austin to the team, head coach Shantay Legans announced. Austin (6-4, 205) joins the Pilots after spending three seasons at Fordham University. He will have three years of eligibility remaining on The Bluff.
This past season, Austin was named the team MVP after leading the Rams in scoring at 11.4 points per game. He also led the team in minutes played (35.3), three-pointers made (24), finished 25th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and 20th in three-pointers made per game.
"We are excited to welcome Chris to the Portland Basketball Family," Legans said. "Chris is a dynamic player with quality Division I playing experience. He can do a little bit of everything on the court and is the type of player that we have had tremendous success developing. He is going to be a great fit on The Bluff."
Austin began his collegiate career by starting six of nine games as a true freshman during the 2018-19 season before an injury cut his year short. He bounced back as a redshirt freshman in 2019-20 and started seven of the 24 games in which he appeared.
The Pasadena, Calif. native had a dominant high school career at Maranatha High School. Austin led the Minutemen to an Olympic League championship during the 2017-18 season. That same year, Austin was named MVP of the Olympic League, was a first-team all-CIF Division 1AA selection, and was named First Team All-Area by the Pasadena Star News.
Austin is one of several transfers joining the Pilots and adds depth to a very talented 2021 class. Legans, who was hired back in March for the Pilots, is bringing three transfers with him from Eastern Washington –
Mike Meadows,
Tyler Robertson and
Jack Perry – as well as three other transfers in
Matheus Silveira,
Moses Wood and
Kristian Sjolund. Legans has also signed three true freshmen in
Yaru Harvey,
Skylar Wilson and
Nikola Milosevic.
