PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball has added Moses Wood as a graduate transfer to the program, head coach Shantay Legans announced. Wood (6-8, 210) joins the Pilots after spending the last two seasons at UNLV and will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the fall of 2021.
"Moses is a dynamic and versatile player that will thrive in our system," Legans said. "He is a good athlete with strong ball skills for his size. Moses has great shooting ability and a good feel both around the basket and out on the perimeter. His length will help us defensively and he will be a great add to the locker room. We're excited to get him on campus and get to work this summer."
"I think Portland is going to be a great spot for me basketball-wise," Wood said of his decision to join the Pilots. "I really like what Coach Legans has talked to me about and he was obviously a very successful coach at Eastern Washington, so I'm excited to come here and hopefully make some NCAA Tournament appearances. He was talking about the types of players and guys he wants – high character guys, guys that value winning – and I wanted to play for a coach that wants guys like that. He wants guys that'll play hard and I just think that I fit the mold of the type of player he wants."
Wood spent this past season as a valuable member of the Runnin' Rebels rotation. The Reno, Nev. native averaged 6.1 points per game and 4.2 rebounds while posting one block a game. He reached double-digit scoring eight times, including a career-high 17 points against St. Katherine on Jan. 12. His 26 blocks this past season was good for the second-most on the team. Wood redshirted during the 2019-20 season after transferring from Tulane.
As a true freshman for the Green Wave during the 2018-19 season, Wood appeared in 31 games and made two starts. He averaged 4.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting 37.3 percent from behind the arc and 78.4 percent from the charity stripe. He was the top scorer off the bench that season for Tulane, with a season-high 17 points against Memphis. He added six rebounds and three blocks in that contest as well.
A graduate of Galena High School in Reno, Wood was a three-star recruit and the No. 5 prospect in the state of Nevada by ESPN.com in the Class of 2018. He averaged 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game as a senior, earning Northern Nevada Player of the Year honors as well as a second team all-state selection. He was a two-time All-Sierra League selection and a two-time First Team All-Northern Nevada Team member.
Wood is the seventh newcomer to join Portland's offseason incoming group of players. He is the fifth transfer along Eastern Washington's
Mike Meadows,
Tyler Robertson and
Jack Perry, as well as
Kristian Sjolund from UTEP.
Yaru Harvey and
Skylar Wilson will join the Pilots as true freshmen for 2021-22 season.
