SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Portland women's tennis doubles tandem Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge recorded an opening round victory Wednesday at the ITA Fall National Championships held at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Pilot duo beat Kentucky's Carlota Molina and Elizabeth Stevens 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the Round of 32 and now move on to face the tournament's top seed team from Pepperdine, No. 6-ranked Janice Tjen and Savannah Broadus on Thursday.
This marks the first time that Portland women's tennis has been represented at the ITA Fall National Championships, which replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships beginning in 2017. The duo qualified for the 32-team doubles draw by reaching the finals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in October.
The win improves their record as a doubles team this fall to 12-4, which included four wins at the ITA All-American Championships in addition to the finals run at regionals.
The event continues Thursday with live
video streaming, live
point-by-point scoring, as well as daily
Cracked Racquets live coverage.
