PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball announced the signing of Tyler Harris (Hayward, Calif./Granada HS) to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Shantay Legans announced on Wednesday. Harris helped Granada High School to the 2023 NorCal state title and is the third incoming freshman to join the Pilots for the 2023-24 season.
"Tyler has polished his game and brings a dynamic skill set to our team," Legans said. "He has great size and athleticism that he utilizes very well. Tyler can do a lot of things well at both ends of the court and we're excited to get him in our system and watch him continue to improve."
"The system fits me and I trust the coaching staff," Harris said of his decision to choose Portland. "Coach (Arturo) Ormond has recruited me for many years and we have gotten close. I know that they will put in me the right position to be successful."
"Athleticism, scoring and defense," Harris said he will bring to the team. "I am someone who plays hard and just wants to help the team win. My size and skills will allow me to bring the ball up and make plays for others."
Harris (6-8, 185) was one of the top unsigned players from California this spring after leading Granada High School to its first California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) NorCal Division I Championship. A third team All-CIF Division I selection, Harris led Granada with team-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds in the CIF Division I State title game loss to Notre Dame. Harris garnered San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro Team recognition and All-East Bay Athletic League Second Team honors.
Harris joins previously announced freshmen
Cyprian Hyde and
Vincent Delano, as well as transfers
Alimamy Koroma,
Thomas Oosterbroek,
Noah Jordan and
Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams as part of Portland's incoming class for the 2023-24 season.
Legans and the Pilots will bring back several key players including two-time All-West Coast Conference guard, Tyler Robertson. Robertson averaged 15.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and a WCC-best 5.2 assists per game last season.
Chris Austin, who averaged 14.2 points for the Pilots during the 2021-22 season, will return to the active roster next year after redshirting this past season with a broken leg. Juanse Gorosito earned All-WCC Freshman Team honors, broke the Pilot freshman record for three-pointers made (63) and started 12 games, while center Vasilije Vucinic started 10 games. Portland is also eager to integrate Vukasin Masic (Maine transfer) and freshman Bol Dengdit who are coming off redshirt seasons and expected to be key contributors.
