PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Portland men's basketball program has added forward Vasilije Vucinic to the 2021-22 roster, head coach Shantay Legans announced. Vucinic (6-11, 220) has represented his home country of Montenegro at the youth national team level and played for numerous club teams at the junior and senior level. He joins the program as a true freshman for the 2021-22 season.
"Vasilije's skill level combined with his 6-11 frame is a perfect fit for how we want to mold our post players here at Portland," Legans said. "His size, athletic ability, ball skills and shooting stroke is what has our staff ecstatic to have him join our basketball family. As a teammate of Nikola (Milosevic), he has experience playing against pros and we expect him to come in ready to compete."
A native of Bijelo Polje, Montenegro, Vucinic was a starting forward on the U-18 Montenegrin National Team that played at the 2019 FIBA European Championships. Montenegro finished tied for the top record in Group B and placed 12th overall at the elite tournament. Vucinic appeared in all seven contests and averaged 4.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 17.0 minutes per game.
Vucinic most recently played for the Montenegrin club team KK Podgorica Bemax alongside with recently signed Pilot guard,
Nikola Milosevic. He made 10 starts and appeared in 22 games averaging 5.8 points and 4.4 rebounds. Before that, Vucinic had stints with KK Lovcen Cetinje and KK Jedinstvo. In Junior Adriatic League play with Lovcen Cetinje back in the 2019-20 season, he averaged 19 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest.
Vucinic is the fourth true freshman coming to The Bluff for this season joining Milosevic,
Yaru Harvey and
Skylar Wilson. Legans has also brought in seven transfers, including three players –
Mike Meadows, Tyler Robertson and
Jack Perry – from his previous school, Eastern Washington. Transfers
Matheus Silveira,
Kristian Sjolund,
Moses Wood and
Chris Austin have also joined the Pilots for the upcoming season.
